Britain Works

Given the issue of rising unemployment in the UK, Microsoft is dedicating itself over the next three years to helping get Britain back to work. Through a series of partnerships with nongovernmental organisations (NGOs), community learning centres, and public authorities, we are aiming to help half a million people into jobs in the areas of the economy that will lead the recovery. These will be digital jobs, requiring the use of computer skills, and will be in a range of industries from manufacturing to services and the IT industry itself.

Enable Sleep / Hibernate with Hyper-V

From Virtual PC ...
When you enable the Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2008 support for sleep /
hibernate will be disabled.

Q. Is there some way that I can "hack" the system to re-enable sleep /
hibernate with Hyper-V? A. No.

I am using Windows Server 2008 R2 as my primary laptop with Hyper-V ... I have a partial solution to this problem.

You can have Hyper-V installed but not started by the following registry setting:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hvboot]"Start"=dword:00000003

Now, when I start my laptop i have full access to the power management fucntionality.

If I need to demo a VM, I can start Hyper-V with the command

net start hvboot

Power management is then disabled again until the next reboot.

SharePoint in the cloud

msonline

Just returned from a Business Productivity Online Services (BPOS) architects boot camp in Seattle.

One of the highlights was a tour around one of the Data Centers which are hosting the BPOS cloud services.

Was interesting to learn more about the next Generation 4 Modular Data Centers design. Think of it like 'building blocks', where the data center are composed of modular units of prefabricated mechanical, electrical, security components, etc., in addition to containerized servers.
