PDC Day 2 - Windows 7 & Office Web applications

Day 2 at the PDC ...

Demonstrations of Windows 7. Windows 7 extends developers investments in Windows Vista and encourages the creation of new applications and services for the Windows platform. A pre-beta build of Windows 7 was given to PDC attendees; it was announced that a full Windows 7 beta would be released early next year.

Demonstrations of Live Services including Live Mesh a service for synchronizing data across multiple PCs and devices. Today, the powerful synchronization capabilities of Live Mesh have for the first time been opened to developers through a Technology Preview of the Live Framework, enabling Web developers to extend their Web applications to a world of Windows-based PCs and extending their Web applications offline.

Demonstrations of Office 14 Web applications - lightweight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote - through a browser. With these new applications, people can use a browser to create, edit, and collaborate on Office documents. What's great is that this provides a consistent Office experience when and where our customers want it, regardless of whether they are accessing their Office documents through the PC, phone, or browser.

PDC Day 1 - Windows Azure

Day 1 at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference 2008, Ray Ozzie, announced Windows Azure, the cloud-based service foundation underlying its Azure Services Platform, and highlighted this platform's role in delivering a software plus services approach to computing. The Azure Services Platform is an industry-leading move by Microsoft to help developers build the next generation of applications that will span from the cloud to the enterprise datacenter and deliver compelling new experiences across the PC, Web and phone.

Ozzie described how this platform combines cloud-based developer capabilities with storage, computational and networking infrastructure services, all hosted on servers operating within Microsoft's global datacenter network. This provides developers with the ability to deploy applications in the cloud or on-premises and enables experiences across a broad range of business and consumer scenarios.

Key components of the Azure Services Platform include the following:

  • Windows Azure for service hosting and management, low-level scalable storage, computation and networking
  • Microsoft SQL Services for a wide range of database services and reporting
  • Microsoft .NET Services which are service-based implementations of familiar .NET Framework concepts such as workflow and access control
  • Live Services for a consistent way for users to store, share and synchronize documents, photos, files and information across their PCs, phones, PC applications and Web sites
  • Microsoft SharePoint Services and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Services for business content, collaboration and rapid solution development in the cloud

Not shown on this slide is the Microsoft Global Foundational Services which underpins Windows Azure. This is the hardware abstraction layer that enables the high availability of services and the resilience of data by automatically distributing an application across multiple machines and, next year, multiple data centres on different continents.

ARF for SharePoint

Vince Rothwell has made his 'Alternative Rendering Framework' for SharePoint freely available for anyone to use.

ARF

ARF is an open source framework specifically designed for MOSS and WSS which makes creating accessible SharePoint publishing sites easier.

By giving you control over the HTML produced, ARF allows you to re-create designs exactly as they are meant to be.

By making use of XML and XSLT development time is dramatically reduced. ARF is compatible with both MOSS and WSS, making accessible SharePoint sites easy with either product. In fact this site has been developed using WSS v3 and ARF.

Hyper-V and Sound

Just installing the Podcasting Kit for SharePoint on my Hyper-V image and wanted sound to be working. However, Hyper-V doesnt support a sound card.

Solution is ... rather than use the Hyper-V connection, instead use Remote Desktop client and enable sound remoting under the advanced configurations options.

I also had to ...
- start the Windows Audio service
- go into Terminal Services Configuration, select the RDP-Tcp connection, select the Client settings tab and ensure Audio Redirection was not disabled.
