Foxit PDF IFilter - x64 and 32 bit Windows

Foxit software have released a 64bit PDF IFilter :

The installer does not register it with MOSS 2007. After installing:
  • Add a PDF extension in MOSS search settings
  • Open regedit, locate [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\12.0\Search\Setup\ContentIndexCommon\Filters\Extension\.pdf]
  • Change the default value to {987f8d1a-26e6-4554-b007-6b20e2680632} .
(You can get this handler addin value using citeknet ifilter explorer)
  • Cmdline: net stop osearch . then: net start osearch

How is this better than Adobe's iFilters?

There is no 64 Bit IFilter from Adobe.

I used this method this morning and it seems to be working well on our 64-bit system.

Foxit PDF IFilter is multi-threaded so achieves higher performance on multi CPU servers. The Adobe PDF IFilter is not. Testing shows that Foxit IFilter is superior than Adobe IFilter in terms of performance.

I just installed the Foxit ifilter on our x64 index server. It works great! Thanks for the info.

I can't get it to work. I install the IFilter on the Index Server, change the registry key and restart the Office Search Service.

After a full crawl ALL documents are removed from the index because the Gatherer can't find them. The Search Results only show sites matching the keyword.

You need to restart your sharepoint servers.

After the modification I did a full crawl and indeed all documents were removed. After a reboor I tried again, this time succes.

Thanks for the registry tip !

I am about to install the ifilter in a server farm environment. I have 1 index server, 2 query servers and 2 wfe's servers. So I think according to documentation I have seen all I need to do after installing, changing registry settings is reset all crawled content and restart Sharepoint. Is there anything else? Also what about the pdf icon?

"How is this better than Adobe's iFilters?"

The latest iFilter (from version 8 of reader) from Adobe has a memory leak in it that Adobe aren't interested in fixing.

One catch though with the Foxit version... it's not free like the Adobe one would be.

"Foxit PDF IFilter can be used for free on desktop environment. However, users need to purchase licenses when they use Foxit PDF IFilter on server environments.
License cost for each server with up to two CPU cores is $329.99. Each additional CPU core costs $129.99. Please be aware that each dual-core CPU counts as two CPU cores and each quad CPU as four CPU cores. Each license covers both 32-bit and 64-bit IFilter versions."

In response to customer requests, Adobe is releasing this prerelease version of instructions and files which will allow a server administrator to configure the current 32-bit PDF iFilter to work on 64-bit systems, specifically Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 on Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition. http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/PDF_iFilter_8_-_64-bit_Support

It has been fixed, make sure to reset your cerawl and restart your server. Not sure what fixed it but eventually the newest version of Foxit PDF worked. Now what is taking Adobe so long???? Unreal...why is everyone overlooking Sharepoint on 64 bit?

Currently I'm doing some R&D on iFilters available including iFilters for PDF files.

Having 2-3 iFilters options in market calls for need to evaluate them.

    Read the performance evaluation here
