Compliance Server - free EDRM solution for SPS/WSS

I've been beta testing 80-20 Compliance Server a records management / document retention solution for SPS/WSS ... it offers an adaptable platform that helps the organization mitigate risk and strengthen corporate compliance by managing unstructured content in a centralized database repository.

But this EDRM solution has a difference ... 80-20 are donating it free of charge to the SharePoint community and furthermore it has not been crippled or made intentionally deficient in any way!

80-20 Compliance Server lets companies cost-effectively audit, retain, archive, and manage all content for compliance and includes the following components:
  • Server - enforces retention business rules, installed on Sharepoint Server, stores documents and metadata in SQL Server.
  • Web Parts - enables direct application of retention schedules to team documents.
  • Records Administration Workbench - for records specialists to administer disposal schedules, file plans and archives.
  • SDK - allows users, partners, developers etc - to further extend if desired the utility of 80-20 Compliance Server for Sharepoint in ways specific to corporate need.
  • File Plan - enterprise ready file plan for immediate use, can be extended or modified as needed.
  • Step by Step guide - to implementing retention compliance.

      Mark,

Great post - I have heard good reports of 80/20 before.

How do you see this sitting along-side the Offical File functionality in Office 12?

      Martin,

With Mark's kind indulgence, I thought I might post a response to your question.

Firstly thanks for the kind words on 80-20. I'm assuming you are asking about the new Open XML Formats in Office 12?

80-20's been designing add-ons to Microsoft platforms for 9 years now, so we are pretty practised at building for today's platform and absorbing the platform advances of later releases to give a consistent experience (our first DM system used Exchange 5.5 Public Folders as a store because there was no such thing as the SQL based WSS then).

We're still investigating but we think the new Office 12 file formats give us a real opportunity to streamline metadata storage. At the moment we store the object as a blob in the database and the metadata as a row - these formats may give us some real backend performance leverage.

Will there be a difference from the user perspective? At the very least we will ensure that a user of any version of Office has the same experience but there may be more we can offer to an Office 12 user ... stay tuned.

From the developer perspective, the availibility of these formats should significantly enhance the flexibility we can offer via our SDK particularly in the area of data mining.

    Cheers
    David
